Dr. Timothy W. Sloan

Timothy W. Sloan serves as the Senior Pastor of The Luke Church in Humble, Texas. A native of Sherman, Texas, he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and his Master of Divinity Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He has studied law at Rutgers University School of Law in Camden and South Texas College of Law in Houston. He earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree in Transformative Leadership from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York.

Upon relocating to Houston, Dr. Sloan began serving as the Minister of Human Service Programs at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. William A. Lawson. He later joined the staff of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IM) as the Director of Interfaith Relations.

In May 2002, Dr. Sloan was called to serve as the Senior Pastor of The Luke Church. Under his leadership, The Luke has grown from 300 to over 8,000 members, highlighted by an extensive acquisition of property and the construction of a new worship campus and life center. He has led The Luke in developing partnerships with national organizations such as AARP, NFL Play 60, American Heart Association, Dairy Max, and the NAACP to meet a growing faith community’s personal and corporate needs. Committed to a local and global missionary vision, The Luke has directed missionary representatives to South Africa and Haiti. As an ambassador for New Missions, an outreach organization to Haiti, Dr. Sloan is at the forefront of an effort to build schools and churches, educate pastors, and provide medical assistance. In partnership with New Missions, he helped to facilitate the construction of a medical clinic in Léogâne, Haiti.

During the global COVID pandemic, Dr. Sloan emerged as a national leader in the effort to educate the Black Church on the effects of the vaccine. He was selected by Anthony Fauci, M.D., Former Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for a personal interview to address questions concerning the hesitancy of many African Americans towards the vaccine. Dr. Sloan made numerous appearances on national news outlets to discuss how the Black Church was responding to the pandemic.

Dr. Sloan is the author of two books. Stand: Learning to Lead through Conflict is the transparent story of how he led The Luke Church through the turbulent transition from a traditional to an emerging model congregation. It offers a unique and strategic vision to help leaders navigate organizational conflict. And Closer to You: A Devotional for Dads and Daughters, which he co-authored with his teenage daughter Sarah Julia.

Dr. Sloan is a social justice advocate and cultural architect who works to build bridges between generations to promote understanding and cooperation. He is deeply committed to mentoring and educating the next generation of leaders, and has lectured and preached at numerous conferences and at colleges and universities, including Morehouse College, Payne Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, Hampton University Ministers Conference, IC3 Church Conference and the African American Preaching Conference at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, to name a few.

Dr. Sloan has been honored by Houston Community College and inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at his beloved alma mater, Morehouse College. His oil portrait was recently inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel Hall of Honor. He served on the NAACP HIV Faith and Social Justice Advisory Board and participated in developing a manual to assist faith leaders and churches in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Sloan is married to Sonya M. Sloan, M.D., an Orthopedic Surgeon, and together they have three beautiful children: Sarah Julia, Soren Grace, and Timothy John.
